In the midst of their innocent formative years, young ones
tend to have an inquisitive mind. They want to know the how
and why of everything and they tend to search more and more.
Some are adventurous and tend to wander into every nook and
corner to learn something new. While others would ask far
too many questions, that sometimes leave parents and others
harrowed. And then there are children content with all the
books piled up in front of them.
The fact is that children have an unquenchable thirst for
knowledge. As they grow older they search for all the
amazing and wonderful facts they can find and their
excitement multiplies when they can share it with their
friends, at school and at play. Their interest increases
when there are pictures to support their findings. They not
only want to know about things, but also see and feel them
to make the experience all the more real.
Sometimes parents are at a loss when trying to search for
general knowledge questions or
amazing facts for kids. However, the best source is the
bookstores and libraries. There is also a number of
multimedia software that has pictorial encyclopedias.
Advisably, for the younger children up to the age of eight
years, parents should get them pictorial encyclopedias that
are not too heavy to carry, and are available topic-wise.
For the older children the larger collection of titles such
as Britannica, Americana, etc., will give them all the
knowledge and facts they are looking for. In fact, it is
necessary to expose children to as much new knowledge as is
possible, as this is a means of expanding their minds and
giving them creative freedom. Their minds are like empty
canvasses, and the kind of knowledge parents and teachers
drill into them will determine their future to a large
extent.
Even television channels like discovery, National Geographic
and Animal Planet are sources for interesting and
bewildering facts
about animals. Instead of letting your child watch
cartoons and other serials that will do nothing to further
their knowledge base, a child should rather be made to watch
these channels.
